Don Williams FCOptom is a highly skilled Advanced Clinical Practitioner (Ophthalmology) and accomplished GOC-registered specialist Optometrist, recognised for his clinical expertise and dedication to advancing eye care. Don was part of the glaucoma team at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) until 2020, where he played a pivotal role in the management of complex glaucoma cases.
In February 2020, Don was awarded Fellowship (FCOptom), the highest distinction in his field, joining an elite group of fewer than 100 Fellows by examination and portfolio in the UK. This prestigious accolade is earned by less than 1% of registrants, marking Don’s commitment to excellence. His achievement as one of the UK’s top 5 finalists for Optometrist of the Year 2020 further attests to his clinical skill, innovation and ability to inspire peers.
Don graduated with Honours from Aston University’s Institute of Vision Science and is registered with the General Optical Council, the College of Optometrists and the Association of Optometrists. Specialising in Refractive (Laser) and Cataract Surgery, he spent over three years in the laser eye surgery field alongside his hospital role. Don is also listed on the General Optical Council’s specialist register in therapeutics.
Don’s academic credentials include a Master’s degree in Advanced Glaucoma Diagnostic Detection, using the state-of-the-art Glaucoma Module Premium Edition software for which he was awarded ‘Distinction.’ He also holds the highest professional qualification in the field of glaucoma. Don is also an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Ophthalmology and holds a Masters degree in this highly specialised field. He has recently started a third Masters degree in Artificial Intelligence (Southampton Uni), an area that he is really passionate about.
Don has over ten years of experience managing glaucoma patients in community ophthalmology settings, including a previous role as Clinical Lead for NHS community eye services in Birmingham. His training spans several esteemed institutions, including Aston University, Ulster University, Bradford University, Moorfields, the University of Plymouth, Cardiff University and now Southampton University.
Outside of his professional life, Don enjoys spending time in the gym or walking through the scenic landscapes of Worcestershire, where he currently resides.
