Don Williams FCOptom  is a highly skilled Advanced Clinical Practitioner (Ophthalmology) and also an accomplished GOC-registered specialist clinical Optometrist, recognised for his clinical expertise and dedication to advancing eye care. Don was part of the glaucoma team at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) until 2020, where he played a pivotal role in the management of complex glaucoma cases.

Don Williams is also listed on Top Doctors UK, recognising his expertise and contribution to eye care.

Mr Don Williams founded Edgbaston Eye Clinic in August 2017. Based at 38 Harborne Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 3HE, the clinic’s aim is to provide affordable private specialist eye care.

Academic Background

Don graduated with Honours from Aston University’s Institute of Vision Science and is on the specialist register with the General Optical Council. Specialising in Refractive (Laser) and Cataract Surgery, he spent over three years in the laser eye surgery field alongside his hospital role. He was also awarded his Fellowship in 2020 so Mr Don Williams has been a Fellow for 6 years now.

Don’s academic credentials include dual master’s degrees, including an MSc in Advanced Glaucoma Diagnostic Detection, for which he was awarded Distinction, and an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice in Ophthalmology. He also holds the highest professional qualification in glaucoma, alongside a range of additional postgraduate qualifications in specialist eye care. Don is a registered Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Ophthalmology and is currently studying for his third master’s degree, an MA in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Southampton, reflecting his growing interest in the future role of AI within healthcare and ophthalmology.

Mr Don Williams is currently progressing through the American Fellowship programme with the American Academy. This is the profession’s most prestigious, challenging and internationally recognised postgraduate distinctions and is working towards the FAAO designation. Upon successful completion, he will hold Fellowship both in the UK (FCOptom) and America (FAAO), giving him the distinction of dual Fellowship across the two most highly respected professional institutions in the world. 

20 years of clinical experience

Don has twenty years of experience with the last fifteen managing glaucoma patients in community ophthalmology settings, including a previous role as Clinical Lead for NHS community eye services in Birmingham. His training spans several esteemed institutions, including Aston University, Ulster University, Bradford University, the University of Plymouth, Cardiff University and now Southampton University.

Outside of professional life, Don enjoys spending time in the gym or walking through the scenic landscapes of Worcestershire, where he resides.

His specialist interests include glaucoma & ocular hypertension, ocular surface disease, keratoconus, medical retina such as detection and assessment of ‘eye mole’ and complex ophthalmic diagnostic assessments.

Civic Honours

Don Williams holds two distinguished civic honours within the City of London

Freeman of the City of London

On 9 December 2025, Mr Don Williams was admitted to the Freedom of the City of London, a prestigious honour dating back nearly eight centuries and traditionally awarded to individuals who have demonstrated excellence, leadership, and contribution within their field. These honours recognise Don’s longstanding commitment to ophthalmic practice and his influence within the wider clinical community.

Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers

In 2025, Don was admitted as a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, one of London’s oldest and most respected Livery Companies, established by Royal Charter in 1629. This prestigious honour is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the advancement of eye care and vision science.
