CAR T-cell therapy transforms life of patient with severe lupus
CAR T-cell therapy is already an established treatment in some blood cancers, but it is now generating major interest in autoimmune disease. Early UK lupus trial data have shown very promising results, with most patients treated entering remission after therapy designed to reset the immune system by targeting harmful B cells. For patients with severe lupus, this raises the possibility of a completely new treatment approach rather than simply long-term disease suppression.
What makes this especially exciting is that the same principle may also be relevant to other autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Although this remains early-stage research and more data are still needed, CAR T-cell therapy may represent a significant step towards deeper, longer-lasting control of autoimmune disease, and perhaps, in selected cases, something closer to true immune reset than anything currently available.
